THRACE. Alopekonnesos. Circa 350-300 BC. AE (Bronze, 18 mm, 5.51 g, 12 h). Head of Dionysos to right, wearing wreath of ivy and fruit. Rev. A-Λ-Ω Kantharos; to left, grape. HGC 3, 1300. Yarkin 27-32. Rare and unusually attractive. Minor deposits on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

The name Alopekonnesos ('fox island') refers to the foundation myth of the city, according to which the colonists were directed by an oracle to found their city on the spot where they would first encounter a fox with its cub.
